Media says the Democrats have capitulated. Media credits 45 with keeping his mouth shut. For once. What are your thoughts?

Note: 45 didn’t get to go to his club this weekend and brag to $150,000-a-plate sycophants on the anniversary of his (hugest ever) inauguration.   I read recently that Air Force One costs $100,000 per hour to operate. I bet it’s way more than that.

didn’t they merely kick the can down the road for a couple of weeks though?

in theory the shutdown could happen again really soon

I’m not sure how 45 can take any credit for this at all. He didn’t do anything.

Although, maybe it’s a good thing he didn’t, as every time he opens his mouth he seems to insert his foot into it.

I’m not really sure what the end game is here for the Democrats. They don’t want to gut DACA, and the want CHIP to be paid for. If they believe that they will legitimately discuss DACA (like they were “promised”) and the Republicans will listen, then they’re even bigger fools than I realized.

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, it’s only a short-term approval, and CHIP is apparently funded now.

So, it looks like the Democrats only gained leverage (the problem is that any shutdown naturally benefits anti-government Republicans more than Democrats) out of this.

By the way, the $150,000-a-plate meal had caviar that was served with plastic spoons.

Classy.

https://www.eater.com/2018/1/22/16918808/mar-a-lago-caviar

But I digress. 45's actions in the last few days, in the form of turning down compromises already reached by Dems and Reps on twitter, was a major cause behind this result.

He’s already screwed the pooch. No further input was necessary after that was done.

Point-of-fact: that wasn’t during a fundraiser, just the regular dinner service. Still, caviar with plastic spoons is tacky.

That’s true. It was regular service.

But I agree on the tackiness as well.

Conservatives love to obsess about how the rest of us obsess about what 45 eats. Well done steaks with ketchup, for example. I love obsessing about 45's general tackiness because it’s so effective at annoying 45's sycophants. And because 45 is tacky.

I did read that at least with respect to solar panels, many jobs in the US depend upon cheaply available material, and 45's tariffs jeopardize American jobs, so I’m waiting to see what happens there.

solar panels and washing machines for now... wondering what else may yet get slapped with high tarrifs..

also wondering what china and south korea will do... for the moment they’re still politely complaining about it... but i doubt they’ll take it lying down

I am not sure if I proclaim myself as a student of history or just prefer to be left alone in my deep thoughts...

Generally, I don’t want anyone pointing at the President or Congress to save their problems when they have State Governments which manage their areas and have agreements with other states as somethings cross state lines.

I want to see the Federal Government working to address stuff that needs the muscle and $$s only the Feds have; such as Infrastructure, Nuclear Research, Desalination Plants, better military equipment (We still use floppy disks and Netscape explorer), NASA, and focus on decent Capitalism regulation to further development (hydrogen cars, space equipment, etc.)

The only thing I like about Trump is he shook up the salad dressing that is how inept our current Government is at doing...anything....and no one is willing to take risks like building a new Nuclear plant since 1983. So once he is gone we can refer to him as the “Great Disruptor” and maybe we can have some function again....but I doubt it. Everyone wants to do everything without offending anyone...which is impossible

I don’t care anymore. I hate people so much now I’m ready to pull up stakes and go live somewhere like Barrow, Alaska. I certainly doubt I will ever bother voting in another election again. this country is broken, its people are broken, and I don’t see anyone who wants to fix it. just blame the “other side” for everything being broken.

Well, I think that everyone is playing a bit sketchy at the moment, with the 2018 elections comming I can totally see why this wasn’t a dumpster fire for too long, its a bad look on both parties.

I feel quite sad for how DACA has become a buzz word and not an actual solution, DACA is 800,000 people, immigration reform looks way bigger than that, some say up to 11,000,000 people live illegally in the US. But one needs to compromise. If DACA is a good start then I’m all ears, but I feel like Republicans will claim it was enough and then just let the problem keep growing forever.

Standing in the same place I was before. The fact that republicans are even using children’s healthcare and dreamers as bargaining chips is absurd and right on track for them.

45 never had to cut DACA, but yet he did. If they were white kids from Norway he’d actually try to get a solution.

The whole shut down deal has been discussed to death, nothing I have to add that hasn’t been said before.

But this tariff deal really bugs me. I’ll even start by saying it isn’t a traditionally conservative action but is mainly driven by Trump’s protectionist BS. This is a huge step away from traditional American policy. For years we’ve been trying to get China and other countries to lower trade barriers – being all about the free market and capitalism. Being an immigrant from a developing country I am also aware of the political pressure the US and US-aligned agencies (USAID, IMF, World Bank, etc.) put immense pressure on developing nations to reduce trade barriers in return for humanitarian aid. And now here we are taking a stupidly narrow-eyed view putting new barriers up on our own (in addition to agriculture and other crony barriers we’ve historically had in the first place).

This results in higher costs to consumers. This results in lower competition, technological innovation, and efficiency. This results in less efficient use of resources. This results in us having less credibility and bargaining power with other nations on trade negotiations. All the same stuff we’ve been prophesizing to other countries for decades. Trump should go read a book or two. Or at least have someone on Fox News read a few highlights so he hears them.

chip now has funding and can’t be held hostage again. Dem put up a token defence of DACA. without control of either house I don’t get how people think they had some superpower to push that through as well.

When the timeline of the last two weeks is reviewed it really is nuts. everyone could have walked home with something, which is how bipartisanship things get passed. I can’t keep up with this pace
